Civic Responsibility (2018)
During the 2016 and 2018 U.S. election’s, voters began placing their “I voted” stickers on the grave of Susan B. Anthony, in order to honor her legacy in the women’s suffragist movement (despite her lack of support for the rights of women of color). In response, Savanah Pennell was compelled to cover the head stone of her great great grandmother who immigrated from Mexico with I voted stickers, because she wanted to honor her legacy. She is one of the many reason’s why the artist votes. Because of her perseverance and strength. She is not a historic celebrity, but her story is lasting, and rooted in resilience.
