This photo series is a collaboration with artists Bingxu Wang and Jane Yonge and is an exploration of identity, and all of the complications and forms that it takes. Wang is a Chinese queer who intentionally reivented themselves through the western drag persona Citrus, and Yonge is a Chinese theatre maker from New Zealand exploring tradition through fashion and ritual. Both were living in New York City for the duration of this project, which took place at the 2019 Chinese New Year Parade in Manhattan. This series asks the questions: What does it mean to inhabit a space that you are connected to but are not from? How do we perform our identities in both comfortable and uncomfortable ways? Through both engaging with and subverting tradition, how do we define ourselves, and how do we interact with our extended and outside communities?
